HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s status report by Dr Madhavananda das, Director of
Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai

Maharaj is doing well. Today the physiotherapists made him do some new
excercises for his trunk muscles by making him sit on a gym ball. Maharaj is
able to pull himself up much better now from the wheelchair to a standing
position with the support of parallel bars. Physiotherapists are giving him
lesser support than before for walking now. Maharaj does the stationary
cycling by himself and well. Maharaj is being encouraged to use his right
hand more.

16-Dec-08, report from Maha Varaha prabhu

16th Dec 2008 Morning shift 6am – 12noon
——————————

———–
Today is the Holy Disappearance Day of HDG Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami
Maharaj. Since Guru Maharaja will be busy with his physiotherapy session in
the afternoon so we did a small puspanjali program in the morning before the
breakfast. We held the picture of HDG Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaj infront of
Guru Maharaja and made him to offer flowers while we were chanting HDG’s
pranama mantras.

While Guru Maharaja was having breakfast we read the transcribed lecture of
Srila Prabhupada given on Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaj Disappearance Day in Los
Angeles. After breakfast and little nap we took Guru Maharaja to the
physiotherapy department. Today his physiotherapy session was quite intense.
Guru Maharaja was made to depend more on his body with less support from the
therapist. At the end he became too exhausted and we brought him back to his
room around 12noon. We made him to lie down and fed some fruit. At 1.30pm we
fed lunch for Guru Maharaja.

17-Dec-08, Report

HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s status report by Dr Madhavananda das, Director of
Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai

Maharaja is doing progressively well. The physiotherapist commented that
what they expect Maharaj to do in 10 days, he accomplishes in 5 days. The
doctors are very enthused by Maharaj’s enthusiasm and determination to walk
and get back to normal life. Maharaj asked the neurologist how he’s doing.
The neurologist said Maharaj is doing excellent.

Even though Maharaj is dependant for various things, physiotherapy is making
him independant gradually. Maharaj still can’t sit up from a lying down
position on his own or lie down from a sitting position. But with
physiotheraphy he’s getting more strength in his trunk. Once made to sit he
can sit with minimal support.

Please continue praying.

14-Dec-08, report from Maha Varaha prabhu

14th Dec 2008 Night Shift 6pm – 6am
——————————

——

At 7.20pm Guru Maharaja had his evening fruit. After the evening fruit Braj
Hari Prabhu, Bhadra Balaram Prabhu and myself made Guru Maharaja to sit on
the edge of the bed for 15 minutes. He was sitting without any support. Then
we made him to relax on the bed before taking his dinner. While relaxing
Guru Maharaja was discussing with Braja Hari Prabhu about the facilities
available for him to stay in Juhu Temple.

After the dinner we cleaned Guru Maharaja’s mouth and brushed his teeth.
Dr.Acyutananda, who is representing the Bhaktivedanta Hospital has been
coming for the last one month without fail as a doctor on night shift. At
11pm we both made Guru Maharaja to lie down on his left hand side for him to
take rest.

Everynight Guru Maharaja goes to sleep by lying on his left hand side. Then
around 1am we change his position to right hand side or sometimes facing up.
Tonight, after changing his position, Dr.Acyutananda held Guru Maharaja’s
hand and brought his hand next to railing of the bed for Guru Maharaja to
feel the servant’s calling bell. He told Guru Maharaja, “Maharaj the
bellll(bell) is here. Maharaj the bellll(bell)…is here.” with the ‘l’
sound little thick. Guru Maharaja replied while pointing his belly, “My
belly is here, My belly is here.” Then Guru Maharaja broke into laughter, Ha
ha ha…Ha ha ha.

16-Dec-08, report from Ratnavali dd

After 20 days I got the opportunity to meet Guru Maharaja again today.
Bhaktin Niki accompanied me. We reached the hospital at 6pm. Braja Hari
prabhu and few other devotees were there already in the hospital waiting
outside the room to see Guru Maharaja. One devotee doctor, Radhanath
Maharaja’s disciple by name Kishori dd, was inside Guru Maharaja’s room to
give Acu puncture treatment. So we all waited for her to finish. Dharesh
prabhu and Isvara Puri prabhu was there in the afternoon shift to serve Guru
Maharaja.

After the doctor left, Braja Hari prabhu entered the room with another
devotee to meet with Guru Maharaja. Around 7pm myself and Niki went inside.
Guru Maharaja saw Niki and said, “I know her”. Guru Maharaja gave his
blessings to her. Niki is an aspiring disciple from Delhi. Guru Maharaja
showed all of us how he is able to move his right hand and also said it is
getting stronger than before. Guru Maharaja with great effort holded his
left and right hands together and lifted it up to his head and we all
chanted loudly, “Hari Bol! Hare Krsna!” But Guru Maharaja responded,
“Gauranga!” Everyone was amazed to see Guru Maharaja’s determination.

We were only there for few minutes and we were asked to leave. But Guru
Maharaja pointed to me and said, “I want to talk to her. She is sending all
the reports. She should come sometime and meet me everyday to write
reports.” So all the other devotees left the room. Also the afternoon shift
devotees left and replaced with the evening shift devotees with Ekanath
Gaura prabhu and Acintya Nitai prabhu. Guru Maharaja just finished taking
the fruits which were fed by the devotees.

Guru Maharaja started dictating the report of himself today. The first thing
that Guru Maharaja said, “I have started to chant (Hare Krsna mantra on the
clickers) now and also Gayatri mantras.”

Guru Maharaja made some movements with his right hand to show it is getting
better but it is still weak and not fully alright. He is able to move his
face slowly from one side to another. He said the face muscles are still
stiff and he is able to chew only soft food. In the hospital although they
are giving vegetarian food and even agreed to give without onion and garlic
Guru Maharaja said he is only accepting prasadam. He cannot close his left
eye and therefore in the night, the nurses close it with a patch. Previously
they had a thread to close his eyes but now he doesn’t need it anymore. When
the devotees come closer he is able to see them but when they are far it is
not clear and cannot focus his eyes.

He also mentioned how tracheostomy tube popped out by itself and neither he
nor anyone recognized it had come out. Dr.Shiromani Mataji noticed it and
informed the doctors about it. When Guru Maharaja said this, I exclaimed,
“Guru Maharaja, Krishna is personally taking care of you.” Guru Maharaja
replied, “I am in Krsna’s hands.” Guru Maharaja showed how they have closed
the hole in the throat were the tracheostomy tube was inserted before. He
said he is speaking now without the aid of the speaking device and the
servants are able to fully understand what he says. He is unable to
pronounce clearly all the letters. Except few words (which Ekanath Gaura
prabhu repeated) I was able to understand what Guru Maharaja was speaking.
His speech is getting better. Guru Maharaja said he is hearing all the
devotees’ letters being read to him. He is unable to reply to them as he is
sick in the hospital.

Guru Maharaja mentioned that he received an acupuncture treatment today.
He felt the treatment had some good
effect on him. Guru Maharaja said his right hand feels like a wood and also
some burning sensation in his legs which is all connected to the brain
haemorrhage. The doctors also adviced him to use the right hand as much as
possible eventhough there might be difficulty.

Guru Maharaja said it was an austerity for him to be in the hospital. Then I
replied, “Yes, Guru Maharaja it must be very difficult for you to be lying
down on the bed. You are used to travel and preach and always very active.
Never stayed in a place for so long. Knowing your nature Krsna arranged that
you keep moving from one floor to the other to give association and thus
preach to the different nurses and staff.” Guru Maharaja said, “Yes. I told
them I am a traveling preacher! I was moved from 10th floor to 2nd, to 7th
and now in the 15th.”

Guru Maharaja also inquired about his office staff in Mayapur. I mentioned
how Madhuri Yamuna and myself are in Mumbai. Mayuri Sakhi dd is supervising
the spanish section being in Sweden to get all the reports translated into
Spanish. Vackresvari Mataji is coordinating the russian translations of the
reports. The rest of the devotees in the office are continuing their seva
and waiting for Guru Maharaja to come back to Mayapur.

He said that the doctors are amazed that he is alive. Even if someone is
alive generally they would have to be on respiratory aid or paralysed. But
Guru Maharaja’s case was exceptional. Guru Maharaja said, “Bhakti Caru Swami
had come to meet me before and said I should stay.” Guru Maharaja said it is
only by the blessings of the GBCs and the prayers of the devotees it is
possible. He is very grateful to everyone who is praying for him, chanting
for him, for the Narasimha kavacas and the yajnas. I said to Guru Maharaja,
“You have been praying for all of us so far and now it is our turn to pray
for you. All the devotees are so eager everyday to check your health
situation. Everyone is happy to hear the news of your progress. You are the
pillar of our ISKCON.” Guru Maharaja replied, “I am small.” I responded, “It
is your humility, Guru Maharaja. Even your godbrothers, godsisters,
disciples and no one can even imagine without you.”

Guru Maharaja said the Bhaktivedanta hospital doctors are there 24hrs
constantly present with him taking turns along with the servants to look
after him.

Guru Maharaja said now he doesn’t have any internal tubes in his body. Only
an external tube for passing urine. Guru Maharaja said for the past two
months his body was cleaned with the
sponge. But for the first
time he was given shower yesterday by the servants. Guru Maharaja was today
able to balance his standing without any physiotherapists support just
holding to the parallel bars for a short time. He is also able to do some
baby steps with the help of the physiotherapists and the devotees.

Guru Maharaja’s sugar level and blood pressure are being maintained with the
help of medicines. His WBC has come up slightly today which is a good sign.
There is a possibility that Guru Maharaja could be discharged from the
hospital in a week or two. He wants his face muscles to become normal, to be
able to see, talk and walk normally. Guru Maharaja wants all of us to keep
praying for his full recovery.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

13-Dec-08, from Maha Varaha prabhu

13th Dec 2008 Afternoon Shift 12noon – 6pm
——————————

————-

Today is the day the tracheostomy tube came out miraculously. Bhadra Balaram
Prabhu had described it in detail in his report. Today is also the first day
Guru Maharaja was clad with saffron cloths after being in the hospital for
almost 52 days. He looked very vibrant with his personal saffron kurta and
silk pyjamas.

It was 1.15pm, time to feed lunch for Guru Maharaja. While Guru Maharaja was
relaxing on his bed, I asked him, “Guru Maharaja! Are you ready for the
lunch?” He remained silent. Then I noticed he was trying to roll around his
brahmin thread on his right hand side thumb. But he was not able to do it
properly by himself. After I helped Guru Maharaja to roll around the brahmin
thread, Guru Maharaja started to chant his gayatri by slowly moving his
right hand side thumb accordingly with the help of his left hand. Since the
last few days Guru Maharaja also chanted Hare Krsna Maha Mantra with his
clicker.

After chanting the gayatri mantra we fed lunch for Guru Maharaja. After the
lunch Guru Maharaja took 10 minutes nap. Then at 2.55pm we shifted Guru
Maharaja on a wheelchair and rushed him to the physiotherapy department.
Since it was Saturday the physiotherapy department generally closes by 3pm,
fortunately the therapist were still there when we rolled up.

While we were in the physiotherapy department Dr.Shiromani received a call
that we got another deluxe room available at the 15th floor, which we
original asked for. It is as similar as the room on the 7th floor but with
the bed facing towards South. After the physiotherapy session we took Guru
Maharaja straight to 15th floor for him to have look. Guru Maharaja decided
to shift here because he was very concerned about the sleeping direction. I
thought, though Guru Maharaja is not travelling from city to city but he is
still travelling from ward to ward. From 10th floor to 2nd floor then to 7th
floor and now to 15th floor.

We made Guru Maharaja to relax on the bed and started to set up the new
room. While Guru Maharaja was relaxing on the bed, Dr.Alvar came in to visit
Guru Maharaja. In the middle of their conversation Dr.Alvar who is an ardent
devotee of Lord Krishna mentioned to Guru Maharaja, “Your recovery is
miraculous and I heard your case will be discussed in the international
health forum.” Guru Maharaja replied with full of humility on his face, “Its
all because of prayers.”

At 6pm after having his evening fruit Guru Maharaja wanted to take little
rest to sleep on left hand side. We turned him over on his left with pillows
on his back to support him. Within 5 minutes he fell asleep. For the first
time after 52 days i heard Guru Maharaja was snoring quite loudly.

12-Dec-08, from Maha Varaha prabhu

12th Dec 2008 Morning Shift 6am – 12noon
——————————

———-
This morning Guru Maharaja looked very energetic. Guru Maharaja had his
breakfast at 8.15am. While having his breakfast Dr.Syamalal Prabhu from
Bhaktivedanta Hospital was with Guru Maharaja discussing about the
development of Guru Maharaja’s health. While Guru Maharaja was relaxing on
his bed after having his breakfast, Dr.P.P. Ashok came in for his routine
check. He greeted Guru Maharaja, “Good Morning Swamiji! How are you today?”
Guru Maharaja replied, “I am Ok. Getting better. Need more time.” Dr.Ashok
commented,”You need time and also you need Krsna.” Guru Maharaja said,”Yes!
Krsna.”

Dr.P.P Ashok is one of the main doctor who has been monitoring the progress
of Guru Maharaja’s health from day one since he was admitted in the
hospital. In the beginning some of the doctors expressed no hope for Guru
Maharaja to recover. But from the above comment made by Dr.P.P.Ashok we
could clearly understand that Guru Maharaja’s miraculous recovery has
rejuvenated the faith on Lord Krsna in many doctors, nurses and staffs of
Hinduja Hospital.

Braj Hari Prabhu visited to inform Guru Maharaja that he is trying to shift
Guru Maharaja to a private deluxe room. He also got the room confirmed
later. At 3pm, before we went to physiotherapy department we were informed
that Guru Maharaja will be shifted to a deluxe room located at 15th floor.
After the physiotherapy session, when we returned to the ICU at around 5pm
we were told that Guru Maharaja will be shifted to similar kind of deluxe
room located at 7th floor. We had no choice, so we accepted the changes.

We packed all our belongings and shifted with Guru Maharaja on a wheelchair
from the 2nd floor ICU to 7th floor deluxe room. Everything about this
deluxe room was upto our satisfaction but the direction of bed and the bed
itself was not good. It was an olden style manual hospital bed. Guru
Maharaja was not able to stretch his legs properly. The bed was facing the
northern direction. With not much choice left, we accepted the room
considering the privacy for Guru Maharaja is the most important factor.
Finaly with the help of our devotees and some hospital staffs we got an
electronic bed for Guru Maharaja.
