19-Nov-08, from Maha Varaha Prabhu

From: Maha Varaha Prabhu

Report- 19th Nov 2008, 2.30 pm – 7.30 pm
——————————

—————–

I was on afternoon shift today. Reached the hospital at 2.40pm. Dr.Shiromani
and Dr.Sagar were there from the Bhaktivedanta Hospital. I was told that at
2.30pm GM’s ventilator was completely swithced off and he is breathing on
his own.

At 3.30pm Braja Hari Prabhu and Narahari Prabhu came to visit GM. Narahari
prabhu was inside the ICCU for 10 minutes. As he walked out of ICCU he asked
me to go in quickly. As i approached GM’s bed i saw 2 nurses and Braja
Hari Prabhu trying to communicate with GM. He was sweating and breathing
little heavily without the support of ventilator. Braja Hari Prabhu told me
that GM is trying to say something. I quickly held the alphabetical board
in front of him and asked him to lift his thumb if i hit the right letter.
GM nodded his head. Braja Hari Prabhu was writing it down. Within a short
time we managed to get the first two words and the first letter of the third
word from GM. ‘ASK DOCTOR I….’

The nurse adviced me to stop for a while and continue later as GM was
getting too tired and it might interrupt his breathing process. I told GM to
relax and we would be continuing the communication later. He nodded in
agreement. We walked out of the ICCU.

While i was pondering over those two words, Braja Hari Prabhu showed the
paper to the devotees. ‘ASK DOCTOR I…..’ Dr.Shiromani said that before the
ventilator was switched off GM asked for some prasadam. After 2 minutes of
discussion we figured out that GM was trying to say, “ASK DOCTOR IF i CAN
EAT WHEN THE VENTILATOR IS SWITCHED OFF?”

At around 5pm a nurse told me to feed GM. After 2 hours of breathing without
the support of ventilator he seemed to be tired but he was breathing
steadily. I asked GM if he would like to eat? GM kept waving his left palm.
I asked him, “Are you trying to say if the doctor allowed you to eat without
ventilator?” GM nodded yes. This shows he is on high level of alertness. I
told him that the doctor and the nurses have allowed him to eat. We had
blended kitcheri from the morning and hot upma.

First I started with kitcheri. He had two spoons of it and then showed a
sign asking for the next item. Then upma was fed. I had informed GM that the
upma preparation contained soft diced cauliflower and carrots and he should
chew properly before swallowing them. He did exactly what i said. At one
point he started to turn his head left and right. I asked him is he alright?
He said, “no.” Asked him again whether he is having difficulties in
swallowing the vegetables. He nodded yes. I told GM to spit out all the
vegetables in the mouth. We used another spoon to take out the remaining
vegetables from the deep side of the mouth. In total he had about 15-18
spoons of upma. We gave him some water to drink. After that he rested
peacefully.

In the evening around quarter to seven pm, HG Nitai Prasada prabhu paid his
visit to GM. GM was still breathing without the ventilator and resting, when
we left the hospital at 7.30pm.

20-Nov-08, evening report

HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s status report by Dr Madhavananda das, Director of
Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai

Maharaj’s consciousness level is getting better day by day. Dr Ashok, the
neurologist commented that Maharaj is doing very well and he is very happy
with his improvement. He said that Maharaj asked him through sign
language, “Who are you?”.  He said that the power in Maharaj’s limbs is
stronger and that Maharaj held his hand tightly today. The previous day
Maharaj was off the ventilator for six hours. Dr Ashok said that they’re
going to put a speech valve which will allow Maharaj to speak in a day or
two.

Today Maharaj has been off the ventilator since 11.30 am. It has already
been 7 hours since he has been off it.

Maharaj is continuing a few teaspoons of oral feeds.

As for his critcal condition, he is not as critical as he was on the first
ten days.

Please continue to pray intensely.

16-Nov-08, night shift from Maha Varaha prabhu

16th Nov 2008
————-

Bhadra Balaram Prabhu and myself, Maha Varaha dasa, are on night shift. It
was almost 8 p.m. when we reached Hinduja hospital. Ganga Prabhu was feeding
Guru Maharaja with hospital food — two kinds of vegetable soup, yogurt and
custard. Guru Maharaja is being encouraged to take a soft diet (without
onion and garlic, of course); even if it be just 3-4 tablespoons, we offer
the same and personally feed him.

As we were feeding Guru Maharaja, he made a sign with the fingers, of his
left hand, that he wants to write something. We brought in a notepad and
pen and tried putting the pen between his fingers . . . . . . but he had no
strength to hold anything, whatsoever.

Then a brilliant idea occured to us. We said, “Guru Maharaja ! We will point
out every single alphabet, printed on the alphabetical laminated board ! Put
out your tongue whenever we come to your alphabet !”

Dr.Shiromani Mataji held the laminated board (with all the alphabets printed
on it) right in front of Guru Maharaja’s face, and began to point each
separate letter, as we read that same letter aloud. When we reached ‘F’,
Guru Maharaja stuck his tongue slightly out. We noted down ‘F’. In the
second and third rounds, he moved his tongue when we reached the letter
‘O’. The fourth round was ‘D’.

‘FOOD’ !. But,  just to make sure we got the message right, Ganga Prabhu
asked, “Guru Maharaja ! Are you still feeling hungry ? Do you want some more
food ?” He was silent.

Then I asked him, “Do you want temple prasadam ?” He again pointed his
tongue slightly out. Ganga Prabhu asked, “Do you want kitcheri?” Maharaja
pointed his tongue out. “Do you want dahi with kitcheri ?”  Again, he
pointed his tongue out !

We assured Guru Maharaja that Dr.Shiromani Mataji would ask Dr. P.P. Ashok
for permission to bring prasadam from the temple. Guru Maharaja nodded his
head gently.

17th Nov 2008
————-

Dharesh Prabhu called from the hospital at ten, this morning, with
the auspicious news that Dr. Ashok had given permission to bring special
prasadam, for GM, from the temple. We immediately informed Vasudeva Prabhu
(Guru Maharaja’s personal cook from Mayapur) to start cooking.
Astonishingly, another message came from Hinduja, at 10.45 a.m., “Guru
Maharaja wants prasadam right now !”

Vasudeva Prabhu jumped into action . . .  . . . . . “Maha Prasadam ki Jai !”

9-Nov-08, night shift, from Maha Varaha prabhu

From: Maha Varaha prabhu

HH Jayapataka Swami Guru Maharaja’s ICU lila at Hinduja:

Last night (November 8th) we were reading Shri Chaitanya Charitamrita till 11
p.m., even though Guru Maharaja was in a deep sleep. This morning (November
9) we sneaked into the ICU, at 5 a.m., just to check out on his condition.
Guru Maharaja’s right eye (the left eye has plaster over it) was wide open.
He looked very fresh. I called his name and said a few positive and
encouraging words, whilst mildly rubbing his left hand. He grasped my hand,
firmly, and lifted it on his own. Then he opened his mouth and was trying to
speak something . . . . . . . he kept twisting his tongue. Unfortunately, a
nurse came and told me to leave. No one is allowed, in the ICU, before 6
a.m.

When I entered, at 6a.m., his eye was still wide open – Guru Maharaja was
fully awake. I asked the nurse whether I could speak to him. She nodded. I
reminded Guru Maharaja,”Today is the first day of Bhisma Pancaka Vrata; many
devotees in Mayapur Dham are observing this vrata for your speed recovery.”
He turned his head, bringing his ear more and more closer toward me. I
repeated the same message much louder. He seemed to understand. Then, I held
a photo of Shri Shri Radha Madhava, for about 2 minutes, right in front of
his eyes so that he could take darshan . . . . . . . next, Lord
Nrsinghadeva’s darshan. Upon seeing Lord Nrsinghadeva, he lifted his left
arm, again and again, trying to touch the picture. I brought the picture
closer to his hand. . . . . . . . .that same nurse again! She interrupted us
and told me that my presence was disturbing her duties.

She seems to be quite moody, right now. So I must leave the ICU. The good
news is that Guru Maharaja has been maintaining much higher levels of
external consciousness since yesterday afternoon.

Ys,
Maha Varaha

18-Nov-08, from Ekanath Gaura prabhu

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to Guru Maharaja.

Hinduja Hospital

18th Nov, 7 pm – 11 pm

7 pm: We were today on the night shift of care givers and when we arrived HH
Lokanath Swami was with Guru Maharaja holding his hand and gently touching
his head.

Since visiting hours is only between 5 to 7 pm, he told me he will leave,
and I told him that Guru Maharaja will eat now. He said “Oh, then I would
love to feed him.” HH Lokanath Maharaj in a very humble and caring way fed
Guru Maharaja for arround 30 min. This time Guru Maharaja ate a litle
more!!! Then Maharaja took Guru Maharaja’s hand and placed it on his head
asking for blessings and then Maharaja left.

After Lokanath Swami went Guru Maharaja was trying to communicate with us
during the night.

Guru Maharaja was very active and conscious. Whenever he sees a person he
asks who he is. He wants to know everything that is happening arround him.
His eyes are very active and as soon as he recognizes someone, he starts
calling him and moves his hands and head doing signals asking him different
questions. Sometimes he points his head, sometimes his stomach, sometimes he
moves his tongue like he is talking, sometimes he wants to write and other
times he moves his whole body. Like that Guru Maharaja is interacting with
us in different ways.

When we cannot understand him, he points out the alphabetic board and he
tries to indicate us the letters. It is like playing charades and guessing
what Guru Maharaja wants.

At 10:30 pm, the nurses told me to leave, because it is time to sleep. We
went to ICCU waiting room, and around 11 pm the nurses call out in the
speaker, “bed number 20, bed number 20!!!”. So we rush to Guru Maharaja’s
bed, and I saw like 3 nurses with the alphabetic board, trying to guess what
he wanted, jejeje. Finally they gave up and told us Swamiji want something.
We asked Guru Maharaja and he wanted us to turn off the lights and to
scratch his face. Guru Maharaja did not want to sleep. So I told him,
“Please it is 11 pm, it’s time to sleep.” Like always his nitya lila. But no
hope. So we started to read softly Caitanya Caritamrita, and to do massage
on his legs. Slowly he started to close his eyes and finally sleep.

19th Nov

4:30 am: We went for the morning program, and Guru Maharaja was already
awake asking questions to the nurses. We tried to guess what he wanted and
finally I told him that it is mangal arotik time. We took the picture of
Radha Madhava and Panca Tattva and started singing. He remained silent and
in a praying mood, finally we brought the picture of Lord Nrsimha, and sang
Namas Te prayers.

After the prayers I started explaining to Guru Maharaja the whole history of
what had happened from the beginning when he was admitted in the hospital
until now how he is improving alot. Guru Maharaja was listening carefully as
he always wants to know what was happening to him. Finally I told him that
we are in trouble now, because all his Godbrothers wanted to go to Europe,
USA, Oz, etc!

We would like to thank all the devotees who are caring for Guru Maharaja
especially Braja Hari prabhu and Bhakti Purushottam Maharaja who is leading
the whole team so nicely, all the Bhaktivedanta Hospital doctors lead by
Madhavananda prabhu, Pundarik Govinda Prabhu who is the supervisor and the
devotees who are behind the screen like Madhava Kanta Prabhu, Ratnavali dd,
Sarva Sakti dd, Madhuri Yamuna dd and Vasudevatmaja prabhu who are acting as
facilitators. Also special thanks to the Mayapur Brahmacaris who are
standing outside the hospital guarding 24hrs a day.

17-Nov-08, from Ekanath Gaura prabhu

From: Ekanath Gaura Prabhu

17 Nov afternoon shift

Guru Maharaja was most conscious today.  Asraya, Bhadra Balaram and myself
were in the hospital together with Damodar Pandit Prabhu (the Bhaktivedhanta
Hospital Spiritual Counselor).

7 pm: I went to the ICCU room, and Guru Maharaja was with his eyes open, and
he was observing to see who has come to see him. One of the duties of the
secretaries is to ask Guru Maharaja how he feels, etc, so we ask him and he
nodded his head to say he is ok. Sometimes when we ask him how he is, he
moves his fingers, or limbs to show he is feeling better.

I explained to him that we have a new system for communication, which is
called Camera mouse. It is a software that needs a webcam. The webcam is
used to select a part of your body which will work as a mouse. Guru Maharaja
can use his eyes or his head, or a finger  as a mouse, and he can indicate
the alphabets on the computer or use any program on the computer normally.
He was happy about it.  At this moment he is weak to use it but we will
trying it when he gets little stronger. Damodara Pandit prabhu also
explained to Guru Maharaja about the program and some other details.

Guru Maharaja pointed me his stomach.  I asked him if he would like to eat
and he replied yes.  Vasudevatmaja prabhu had prepared some prasadam for
Guru Maharaja. Since the ventilator was on a full mode we were not allowed
to feed orally any food  to Guru  Maharaja. The fact that Guru Maharaja is
asking for food is a good symptom. It means that his body has started to
work properly.

Later on, I came back and I told Guru Maharaja that many of his Godbrothers
and well wishers came to see him, like Sacinandana Maharaja, Radhanath
Maharaj, Radha Govinda Swami, Kavicandra Swami, Gopal Krsna Goswami,
Tirtharaj, etc.

I asked Guru Maharaja, “Did you see Sacinandana Swami in the morning?” He
was very happy and he inquired with his head if Maharaja was there. I said,
“No, he came in the morning to tell you about  the dream he had with you.”
Guru Maharaja wanted to know about the dream.  I told him that Maharaja will
be coming personally to tell the dream. I also said Tirtharaja came in the
morning with his wife. Guru Maharaja moved his head and hands asking me if
they were here too, unfortunally no i replied, but they send their love to
you.  I said devotees are inviting you, Tirtharaja to OZ,
Bir Krishna Goswami to USA and he opened his eyes very big, and were filled
with tears/

At 7:50 pm I explained  him that we have 4 shifts, Maha Varaha, Bhadra
Balarama, Vaikuntha Pati and Dharesh… Guru Maharaja moved his mouth and
said, “Dharesh?” I said yes. Guru Maharaja wanted to know if Dharesh was
there. I said he would be coming tomorrow. Guru Maharaja was happy to see
that all his servants were there with him. I took his hand  and I told him,
“Guru Maharaja we are all here in the hospital with you.  Not only us, all
the devotees arround the world are here with you. We love you so much, and
his eyes again filled with tears.”

Damodara Pandit Prabhu suggested that we should have a whole day program for
Guru Maharaja with devotees taking turns to read, to chant with him, to feed
him and to visit him.

8 pm: Guru Maharaja started moving his hand towards all the tubes asking me
why he has all these tubes. I told him that one is for ventilator. He
pointed the other and I said for removing the mucus and like this we went
through each one of them. Finally he moved his left hand like he wanted to
chant. So I asked him if he wanted his clicker. He nodded to say no. I asked
if he wanted Black berry. He nodded to say no. I became confused and kept
asking if he wants to chant but that’s not what he wanted. Finally I
realised he was talking about a special device that he has on his left
finger to measure the blood.

19-Nov-08, evening report

HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s status report by Dr Madhavananda das, Director of
Bhaktivedanta Hospital,Mumbai

The neurologist was happy to see Maharaj fully alert and conscious. Maharaj
feels hungry and asks to be fed. He takes a few teaspoons of semisolid food
2-3 times a day.

The weaning from the ventilator is going on. Today they weaned him off the
ventilatory support at 2.30 pm. We are waiting and watching for how long he
can sustain respiration without the ventilatory support.

The progress he is making is very heartening to see and the neurologist and
intensivist are happy with this positive outcome and feel that very soon he
will be able to pull through without ventilatory support.

Maharaj is much less critical as compared to the first 10 days of his
admission in ICU.

Please continue to pray intensely.

18-Nov-08, report from Maha Varaha Prabhu

From Maha Varaha prabhu:

Around 6pm HH Lokanath Swami Maharaj came to visit Guru Maharaja at Hinduja
Hospital. Maharaj is coming after the one month Vraja Mandala Parikrama and
3 days Puri Parikrama. Maharaj was with Guru Maharaja for almost 1 hour 15
mins. He was explaning about the Vraja Mandala Parikrama and also the Puri
Parikrama. According to Maharaj about 5000 Puri Parikrama participants
offered each of their sankalpa in the name of Guru Maharaja infront of the
Simha Dwara (Lion Gate) of Lord Jaganath Temple. He went on explaining in
detail about the success of the parikrama and how the devotees are missing
his transcendental association. Before HH Lokanath Maharaj left the ICCU
ward he asked Guru Maharaja if there is any message for the devotees? Guru
Maharaja pointed out the word ‘Gauranga’ & ‘Haribol’ on the alphabetical
board.

Additional info:

While Ekanatha Gaura prabhu was making the bowl ready to feed the soup to
Guru Maharaja, Lokanath Maharaja wanted to feed Guru Maharaja personally. He
took the bowl from Ekanath Gaura prabhu and fed few spoons of soup to Guru
Maharaja. What a nice loving reciprocation!!!

Yesterday Asraya Govinda prabhu mentioned to Guru Maharaja that he is going
back to Mayapur. Guru Maharaja through the sign language expressed his
desire to also go to Mayapur. Asraya Govinda prabhu replied once Guru
Maharaja gets better and comes out of the hospital will be taken to Mayapur.
Guru Maharaja’s heart is always in Mayapur!

Through the sign language Guru Maharaja wanted to know in which hospital he
was, who were the doctors treating him and who was paying for his expenses.
He is not talking yet but through the alphabetical board, some hand
movements and face expressions communicating with the devotees. The devotees
asked Guru Maharaja not to worry of the medical expenses as it has been
taken care of.

Right now the real hurdle is for Guru Maharaja to come out of the ICCU and
the ventilator. His lungs are little weak. We need another miracle to happen
so that with Lord Krishna’s mercy Guru Maharaja can successfully come out of
the ventilator. The most merciful Lordships seem to be reciprocating
lovingly with devotees’ prayers and we beg Them to continue so that Guru
Maharaja can fully recover.

In conclusion, devotees please remember that Guru Maharaja’s situation is
still critical and sincere prayers are the only medicine.

Your humble servant,

Ratnavali dd

18-Nov-08, 5pm report

HH Jayapataka Maharaj’s status report by Dr Madhavananda das, Director of
Bhaktivedanta Hospital, Mumbai

Maharaj is more alert and is able to clearly understand what is being
spoken to him. He is trying to communicate using the alphabet board and
through his hand movements (which are limited due to weakness). Today HH
Sacinandana Maharaj and HH Candramauli Maharaj came to visit him. They had
a lively interaction with him. When HH Sacinandana Maharaj told Maharaj
that he had come earlier also to visit him, Maharaj showed two fingers
indicating that he remembers that Sacinandana Maharaj had come twice to
meet him which was accurate.

Maharaj ate a few teaspoons of khitchri today. His nutrition is still being
maintained by naso gastric feeds like before.

Maharaj is still on ventilatory support. The weaning process is going on.
Please continue your intense prayers for his quick recovery.
